Recruitment and Training
Your journey to becoming a Special Constable begins with our recruitment process, designed to ensure you have the skills, values and commitment needed to succeed in the role.
Before being offered a place on the Special Constabulary Foundation Learning and Development Programme, applicants must successfully complete a number of recruitment stages, including:
Training Programme
Once appointed, you'll begin a comprehensive training programme designed to equip you with the knowledge, skills and confidence required for frontline policing.
The initial training programme is typically completed over approximately five months and combines weekend classroom-based learning, online sessions and guided self-study. Training is primarily delivered at Norfolk Constabulary training facilities and allows recruits to learn alongside fellow Special Constables in a supportive and professional environment.
During training, you'll develop an understanding of police powers and legislation, incident management, communication skills, safeguarding, victim care and the practical skills needed to police effectively and safely. Some elements of the programme, including Public and Personal Safety Training, are mandatory and must be attended on specified dates.
All learning modules must be successfully completed, and recruits are assessed throughout the programme to ensure they are fully prepared for operational deployment.
From recruitment through to independent patrol, you'll be supported every step of the way as you prepare to join a team of volunteer officers making a real difference in communities across Norfolk.
