The Norfolk Special Constabulary
The Special Constabulary is made up of dedicated volunteer police officers who play a vital role in helping to keep Norfolk safe. Coming from a wide range of backgrounds and professions, Special Constables bring valuable skills, experience and enthusiasm to policing, volunteering their time to serve communities across the county. As a fully integrated part of the policing family, Special Constables work alongside regular officers and staff, making a genuine difference to the people of Norfolk while developing new skills, building confidence and taking on rewarding challenges.
What You'll Do
No two shifts are ever the same. As a Special Constable, you'll be at the heart of frontline policing, working alongside regular officers to respond to incidents, protect vulnerable people and keep communities safe. You could be patrolling neighbourhoods, responding to emergency calls, supporting policing operations or providing reassurance at community events. One shift might see you dealing with a road traffic collision, locating a missing person or supporting a domestic abuse investigation. Another could involve policing a major public event, from local festivals and sporting fixtures to county shows and royal visits. This is real policing, with real responsibility, real teamwork and real impact.
Flexible Volunteering
We ask for a minimum commitment of 16 hours per month, allowing you to fit your duties around work, study, family and other commitments. Many Special Constables choose to volunteer additional hours because of the variety, satisfaction and development opportunities the role offers. The more time you invest, the more experience you gain and the greater your contribution to keeping Norfolk safe.
Where You'll Be Based
You'll normally be based at the police station closest to your home and become part of your local neighbourhood policing team. Some travel may be required for training and development opportunities.
Training, Equipment and Powers
Special Constables receive comprehensive training and ongoing support throughout their policing journey. You will wear the same uniform, carry the same equipment and hold the same police powers as regular officers when on duty. From day one, you'll be treated as a valued member of the team and equipped with the skills and knowledge needed to carry out the role confidently and professionally.
Leadership and Development
The Special Constabulary operates under the command of Norfolk Constabulary's regular officers while maintaining its own volunteer leadership structure. This provides opportunities for development, increased responsibility and leadership experience throughout your time as a Special Constable.
