Tackling drink and drug driving is a daily commitment for our officers but we know that we will experience our biggest peak in the month of July. More people are seriously injured or killed on our roads in the summer than at any other time of year.
That is why we’re asking you to consider, what will it cost you? Your licence? Your livelihood? Your life?
Operation Spotlight is a month-long national campaign, led by the National Police Chiefs' Council which begins today (1 July 2025) targeting all fatal four offences, including drink and drug driving.
The increase in offences during the summer months is due to a number of factors including people making longer journeys and travelling outside of their local area during the holiday season. People tend to make more journeys due to the nicer weather, including vulnerable road users such as cyclists, motorcyclists and pedestrians. New hobbies are also often explored during the summer months such as running, walking and cycling.
Our priority is keeping Norfolk’s roads safe so our officers will be out on patrol, taking the opportunity to speak to road users and explain the risks attached to their behaviours.
Chief Inspector Vicky McParland said: “My officers know all too well what the consequences of drink and drug driving are but do you?
“I know you think that you’re fine, you’re in control and it is only up the road but stop and think. Your actions affect every road user, this isn’t just about you.
“There is always a way to get home safely. Book a taxi, get a lift or catch the bus. Don’t let one summer ruin the rest of your life. “
We would encourage those who believe drink/drug driving to be taking place, to report it immediately, by calling 999.
