A man has been jailed following a series of shop thefts in Gorleston.
Anthony Warne, aged 29, and of no fixed address appeared at Great Yarmouth Magistrates’ Court yesterday (Monday 13 January) where he pleaded guilty to four counts of theft from shop, burglary, and possession of a bladed article in a public place.
Between 5 October and 29 December 2024, Warne stole items from two shops on Magdalen Way on four separate occasions which included laundry products, coffee and alcohol.
On another occasion at approximately 11.50pm on 10 January 2025 at a Co-op on Magdalen Way, Warne was captured on CCTV smashing a window and committing a burglary where six bottles of alcohol were stolen.
Officers arrived on scene where they detained and searched Warne and found an axe and bottles of spirits in his possession.
Warne was subsequently arrested and taken to Great Yarmouth Police Investigation Centre for questioning where he was later charged and remanded into custody.
He also admitted to 13 other offences put to him by Operation Converter which were taken into consideration by the court.
These offences comprised of 11 theft from shops, a common assault and making off without payment.
He appeared at Great Yarmouth Magistrates’ Court yesterday (Monday 13 January) and was handed a 24-week prison sentence and ordered to pay £1841.65 in compensation.
PC Tyler Smith, from the Safer Neighbourhood Team in Gorleston, said: “We will continue to work hard to bring our repeat theft offenders to justice, and encourage retailers to report shop theft to us so we can take positive action against these individuals who continue to commit theft in our local communities.”
