Police are urging businesses to be vigilant following incidents of diesel theft over the weekend.
Two incidents, occurring in Long Stratton and Frettenham respectively, involved the padlock to a fuel tank being cut and a large quantity of diesel being stolen.
While investigations into the incidents continue, officers are keen to remind those with fuel tanks of the following crime prevention advice:
1) Try to keep tanks stored close to the property where you can see them. If this isn’t possible, consider installing CCTV to watch over isolated tanks and restrict access with walls, fences and hedges. Security lighting such as ‘dusk till dawn’ or motion detection lighting can also be an effective deterrent to thieves.
2) Remember to check the oil level in your tank regularly. Look for any spilt fuel, marks on the locks or anything else suspicious.
3) Use ‘diesel dye’, making your diesel traceable and less attractive to thieves
Always report any suspected theft to the police by calling 101, or 999 for an emergency and crime in progress. You can report crimes on our online reporting system here.
