A man has been jailed after mounting a pavement and failing to stop for police.
Robert Wilde, aged 45 and of Gilbert Street, London appeared at Norwich Crown Court on 31 May having pleaded guilty to dangerous driving and driving whilst disqualified at an earlier hearing. He was sentenced to one year in prison and disqualified from driving for two years.
The sentence follows an incident at 8.24pm on 7 February 2024 when officers spotted Wilde driving a white Citroen Dispatch van which was believed to have false number plates. The van was followed for a short time before it indicated and came to stop of its own accord on Oak Street. Officers then activated their blue lights and tried to box in the van.
Wilde proceeded to reverse into the police car behind him, damaging the vehicle and mounted the pavement in an attempt to get away. He drove between parked cars and buildings before rejoining the road and turning the van towards police.
Officers decided to stop Wilde’s van with tactical contact in order to prevent him from causing harm to the public. Wilde continued to try and evade police by ramming the police car behind him but was successfully stopped.
He was arrested and taken to Wymondham Police Investigation Centre for questioning. Wilde was later charged with dangerous driving, driving whilst disqualified, driving without insurance, failing to stop and burglary.
