Detectives have confirmed a man critically injured in an incident in Great Yarmouth just before Christmas has died in hospital.
Emergency services were called at 12.07pm on Friday 22 December 2023 after a man was found with serious injuries in Regent Road, Great Yarmouth. Following enquiries, officers believe he was assaulted inside a communal area of a block of flats on Malakoff Close in the town.
The victim – a man aged in his 50s - was treated at the scene by paramedics and has remained in a critical condition at Addenbrooke’s Hospital. Sadly, he died in hospital yesterday afternoon (Thursday 4 January 2023). The victim’s family are being supported by specially trained officers.
Two men, aged in their 20s and 30s, were arrested on suspicion of GBH on the evening of Friday 22 December 2023 and taken to Great Yarmouth Police Investigation Centre for questioning. Officers were then granted extra time by magistrates to question both suspects.
On 25 December 2023, Martin Montgomery, of Russell Road, Great Yarmouth, was charged with GBH with intent. He appeared at Norwich Magistrates’ Court the following day and was further remanded into custody by the court to appear at Norwich Crown Court on 23 January 2024. A man in his 20s arrested on suspicion of GBH was released on bail, with conditions, until March 2024 while enquiries continue.
Detectives continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding the incident in Malakoff Close on Friday 22 December 2023 and are liaising with the Crown Prosecution Service.
A Home Office post-mortem will now be held over the next few days to confirm the cause of death.
