An exciting opportunity has arisen for existing custody detention officers to transfer to Suffolk or Norfolk to join our police investigation centres based across the counties.

The vacancies will be as part of our succession planning for the next 12 months for both Norfolk and Suffolk Constabularies. Candidates who are successful through the selection process will be placed in a recruitment pool and be offered suitable positions when they become available.

As an existing custody detention officer you will already be experienced in the care and welfare of detained persons whilst in custody. This will include the provision of food, drink and medication as directed, conducting basic health assessments, facilitating religious observance and making reasonable adjustments for the disabled.

In addition, you will be experienced in ensuring cells, interview and changing rooms are clean, tidy and undamaged. You will also be familiar with completing administration functions in the custody suite and taking fingerprints, photographs and DNA samples from the detainee as well as drug testing on arrest samples.

You must be able to demonstrate good communication and interpersonal skills, and be able to evidence previous experience of effectively handling conflict.

It is essential that you meet the following criteria:

  • Demonstrate good numeracy and literacy skills
  • Demonstrate good face-to-face customer service skills
  • Demonstrate the ability to maintain control of difficult situations and individuals
  • Physical ability to effectively restrain detainees
  • Experience of working to strict procedures and guidelines
  • Experience of working effectively as part of a team
  • Demonstrate the ability to be resilient and manage time critical priorities
  • Good basic keyboard skills with working knowledge of Microsoft Office suite
  • Full driving licence due to the need to drive police vehicles
  • First aid qualification
  • Previous experience of supervising the welfare of others

If you are Athena trained this would be an advantage but this is not an essential requirement as the relevant training will be provided to candidates suitably experienced in a custody detention officer role.

Full time posts are 37 hours per week on a rotating shift pattern and will include night and weekend working for which the appropriate allowance will be paid. Zero hours posts are on an ad hoc basis as required by the organisation.

The police investigation centres are based in the following locations: Wymondham, Aylsham, Kings Lynn, Martlesham, Bury St Edmunds and Great Yarmouth. Please indicate on your application which area(s) you would be interested in.

However, please note there will be a requirement to travel to other police investigation centres across the counties to meet operational demands so you must have a full driving licence and be prepared to travel when required.

We are particularly interested to hear from individuals who have a desire to move to Suffolk or Norfolk, if not already living here, so if you are interested in relocating to one of these counties and would like to discuss the opportunities further please contact Inspector Andrew Beeby on 01473 613888, ext. 4866 or the recruitment team on 01953 425699, ext. 2343.

Completed applications should be returned to; [email protected] and should be received by the closing time of 1700 hours on 18th July 2018.
