Band D: £23,946 - £27,096 per annum/pro rata

Applications are invited for the above post at PHQ, Martlesham Heath to work as part of a team, with responsibility for risk assessment and decision making in relation to applications made for certificates issued under the Firearms Acts. 

This role is responsible for the granting of firearm, shotgun certificates and permits, also identification and referral of cases of concern. Main duties include the evaluation and processing of applications, and advising members of the public and police personnel on firearms legislation and related issues.

The successful applicant will have decision making experience and proven communication and organisational skills, with an ability to assimilate large amounts of information and work to a high degree of accuracy.  The applicant should also have an awareness of current law in relation to firearms licensing and previous experience of using computer systems.

It is essential that applicants meet the following criteria:

  • Good numeracy and literacy skills
  • Basic keyboard skills with a working knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite
  • Previous experience of effective decision making and risk assessment
  • Awareness of the law relating to firearms licensing
  • Previous experience of analysing and recording information
  • Proven ability to communicate effectively at all levels and to deal with sensitive and confrontational situations
  • Demonstrate knowledge of the lawful use of firearms in the community


It is desirable that applicants meet the following criteria:

  • Experience of supervising the work of the team and individuals


Hours of work are 29.6 hours per week Monday to Thursday.  The post is offered on a temporary basis for 12 months.

Consideration will be given to whether the post can be delivered on either a part time or job share basis, in line with the organisational requirements of this role.
