The Safe Rider scheme improves hazard awareness

A special course aimed at preventing motorcyclists from becoming casualties or being killed on our roads is being run across Norfolk.

In partnership with Norfolk County Council Casualty Reduction, we have designed the Safe Rider Scheme for every motorcyclist from novices to experienced riders with the aim of helping them to stay safe by improving their standard of motorcycling and giving advice and assessment to reduce the likelihood of their being involved in a collision.

The Safe Rider scheme includes elements of improving hazard awareness and planning and also covers aspects of motorcycling such as safe cornering and overtaking.

The course consists of two evening classroom sessions and a road-based session with a police motorcyclist. During a demonstration ride there will be an assessment but the emphasis of the scheme is relaxed and informal.

Safe Rider is available to residents of Norfolk and the border towns who have received no post-learner training and are not members of an advanced riding group.

If you live outside the county you will need to contact your local police force to find out what schemes (if any) they are running. Please visit Bike Safe for more information on the activities of other UK police forces.

The administration of the project is handled by Norfolk County Council's Road Safety Officer (Motorcyclists) Andy Micklethwaite.

The road sessions will be conducted by Norfolk Constabulary Motorcyclists and the courses will be run at police headquarters in Wymondham.

Enquiries for inclusion in Safe Rider 2011 can be forwarded to Andy by email at andy.micklethwaite@norfolk.gov.uk. Please be sure to include your postcode in the email.
