Community Speedwatch, like the one launched in Shropham have helped reduce speeding in Norfolk villages

Community Speedwatch is a project working across Norfolk empowering communities to play an active part alongside police in tackling the problem of speeding in their neighbourhoods.

In an effort to help tackle the common complaint of speeding, seven village people in Rackheath have now been trained to use speed guns, as Community Speedwatch is launched in the area.

The Rackheath Community Speedwatch was launched, on Monday 5 October, with Rackheath residents volunteering their time to run the scheme backed by their local Safer Neighbourhood Team.

The new Community Speedwatch lead Pete Chapman said: "Community Speedwatch empowers local people to help reduce speeding in their village and surrounding areas and be part of the solution to a common concern".

Volunteers will be carrying out speed checks in 30 and 40mph limits in the village.  Motorists, who are caught breaking the law, will have their details recorded and will receive a letter warning them to keep their speed down.

Those who persistently offend will become targets for police enforcement action.

Pete continued: "The groups visibility and speed checks will make many motorists slow down and think twice about speeding, we fully support the team and will take enforcement action when motorists continuously speed".

The group has been issued with a speed gun, two Community Speedwatch signs and four reflective jackets.
