Speeding can kill, and cause dangerous road traffic collisions.
It sounds simple but many motorists are still not getting the
message.
A scheme now operating throughout Norfolk aims to firmly hammer
the message home.
In order to protect the public and prevent road deaths and
crashes, we have now expanded our speed awareness course pilot
scheme, which was first introduced back in 2006.
Any motorists caught speeding from 1 June 2008, but whose speed
clocked below the threshold of ten per cent of the limit plus six
(for example, 39mph in a 30mph zone) will be offered the chance to
attend a speed awareness course instead of being prosecuted or
receiving a fixed penalty notice.
However, anyone speeding above the ten per cent plus six
threshold will not be offered the course and will be
prosecuted.
The aim of the course is to reinforce the key messages about the
dangers of speeding in order to make drivers realise their error in
judgement, explore why they were speeding in the first place and
hopefully prevent them from doing it again in future.
The course is just one way we are looking at driving down the
number of crashes caused by speeding. We continue to work as a
member of the Norfolk Safety Camera Partnership and the Norfolk
Road Casualty Reduction Group.
The Speed Awareness course is currently provided by Norfolk
County Council and is delivered in accordance with the Association
of Chief Police Officers (ACPO) and the Association of the National
Driver Improvement Scheme Providers (ANDISP) guidelines.
The course provides theory training to both DVLA and non-DVLA
driving licence holders who are eligible to attend. It is based in
a variety of venues around Norfolk, costs £70 to attend and lasts
for approximately four hours. Successful completion of the course
means no penalty points or fine will be incurred.
