The Prevent Strategy is part of a long-term strategy for
stopping international terrorism known as
CONTEST.
The strategy has four strands, Protect, Prepare, Pursue and
Prevent.
The Prevent Strategy is concerned with tackling radicalisation
of individuals and preventing violent extremism.
Who can help tackle radicalisation and prevent violent
extremism?
The Prevent Strategy is about all members of our communities and
partners engaging with us at all levels to prevent the
opportunities and circumstances developing where individuals might
become vulnerable to being radicalised.
How do we tackle radicalisation and prevent violent
extremism?
You can help by being vigilant in your every day home, work and
social lives and by looking out for anything you feel is out of
place that could indicate that someone is starting to become
radical in their views or that they are already planning or
practicing for a terrorist attack.
We want you to trust your instincts and have the confidence to
contact the police with any information, however small or seemingly
insignificant.
For example, do you know someone who has been buying large or
unusual quantities of chemicals for no obvious reason? Have you
seen anyone studying security arrangements, such as CCTV systems,
in a suspicious manner? Do you know someone who has been visiting
terrorist-related websites?
We can reassure you that ALL information is
treated in strictest confidence and with utmost discretion. It will
be thoroughly researched and analysed to decide if any police
action needs to be taken.
