Norfolk Constabulary’s BroadsBeat are asking members of the boating community to be vigilant following recent thefts in West Somerton.

The thefts happened sometime between Monday 8 August and Tuesday 17 August from boats moored at the staithe.

Thieves targeted two boats, where they removed a canopy, supporting framework and two seats from one and a control panel with accelerator and outboard engine were stolen from another.

Police are offering marine enthusiasts the following crime prevention advice:

  • Never leave anything valuable in display.
  • Don’t leave anything loose in the cockpit or on deck.
  • Don’t leave your key in the ignition - always take it with you.
  • Keep your boat keys separate from your engine keys.
  • Always keep your boat locked when no-one is on board.
  • Remove outboards during winter months.
  • Use strong padlocks on all of your hatches, entry points and cockpit lockers.
  • Keep a list of all the serial numbers on valuables and property mark them with your home postcode.
  • Remember to review and improve the security on your boat regularly. Locks will need replacing as well as property marking your valuables.

Anyone with information in relation to the boat theft incidents should contact BroadsBeat officers PC Paul Bassham or PC Jon Hopes on 0845 456 4567 or call Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
