Deputy Chief Constable Simon Bailey

Simon Bailey is Norfolk Constabulary’s new Deputy Chief Constable, succeeding Ian Learmonth who became Chief Constable of Kent in July.

Mr Bailey will be expected to assist Chief Constable Phil Gormley prepare for the new policing landscape in the county following an expected significant reduction in government grant to the Constabulary.

He is no stranger to managing change – as acting Assistant Chief Constable he worked closely with Ian McPherson, former Chief Constable, to modernise Norfolk Constabulary bringing about radical change that improved the service received by local people.

Stephen Bett, chairman of Norfolk Police Authority, said it was a tough competition but that the selection panel were unanimous in the decision.

“We are delighted to promote Simon who thoroughly deserves the position as a member of the ‘home-grown’ command team.  He knows the Constabulary and its people really well and he will be a great asset to Phil Gormley as his right-hand.

“I am confident that we have a top team which will continue to do their best for Norfolk and troubleshoot the challenges ahead in the most effective way.  It will take a great deal of hard work, tenacity and strength of character.”

Chief Constable Phil Gormley said: "I am delighted with Simon's appointment after a two-day process against some top class competition. He has emerged as the right person to help me successfully lead the Constabulary through the operational and financial challenges that lie ahead."

After the two-day process, Simon said it was a privilege to be offered the position as Deputy Chief Constable and that he would endeavour to do his best for the public and for all who worked for the Constabulary.

“I am grateful to the Authority for putting their trust in me and for giving me a great opportunity.  There is uncertainty ahead for policing but I am keen that Norfolk Constabulary builds on its reputation for being innovative in the way it tackles problems and high performing in what it achieves for the public.”

Mr Bailey will take up the position with immediate effect.
