Elderly residents urged to be vigilant
Police in Norwich are urging residents,
especially the elderly, to be vigilant after some recent
distraction and attempted distraction burglaries.
In two cases over the past two days those
responsible have asked the homeowner for a glass of water in order
to gain entry into the property. This included the previously
published incident on Harry Perry Close.
Patrols in the areas targeted are being
stepped up with officers offering crime prevention advice to local
residents.
Inspector for Lakenham and Tuckswood Safer
Neighbourhood Team Lynne Cross said “After a recent spate of
distraction and walk in burglaries we are actively working with
Norfolk Trading Standards to identify suitable locations for No
Cold Calling Zones (NCCZs). These are designated areas where
the resident community declare they no longer wish to accept
traders calling at their homes without an appointment.
“Through local knowledge members of our team
will target vulnerable locations and help prevent elderly people
receiving knocks at their doors from cold callers. This is
achieved by working closely with residents who, on setting up
a zone, will be supplied with NCCZ packs which include door
stickers and educational information. The zones are clearly
indicated by the presence of street signs and residents are
supported throughout by Trading Standards.”
Jon Beales is Sergeant for Earlham, Larkman
and Marlpit Safer Neighbourhood Team and said “We are investigating
these incidents and are asking residents in the city to be vigilant
and report any suspicious activity to the police.
“This is a despicable type of crime preying on
the elderly and vulnerable. We are urging householders to be
especially wary of anyone turning up on their doorstep unannounced
and for people to look out for vulnerable householders living
nearby.”
