Homeowners are being urged not to leave garden tools lying around after a property was broken into using a spade left outside.

The incident happened on Tuesday, in the Acle area where burglars forced open a window using the tool. Thieves also used this same method to break into properties around the same time last year.

Inspector Dave Cuff said: “Burglars will look for any opportunity to gain entry into your home, whether it is through an insecure window or forcing their way in. If they see tools left lying around in your garden then they will use them to get inside.

“Remember to always lock all tools away in your secure shed or garage, black out the windows so burglars cannot see what is inside the shed and report any suspicious activity to police immediately”.

Crime prevention tips to improve garden security:

  • A thorny hedge along the boundary of your property can put thieves off
  • Burglars don’t like gravel, it’s noisy to walk on
  • Always close your gate and secure it with a lock
  • Trim back any hedges or plants that a burglar could hide behind
