Broadcast Meteorologist Martyn Davies, who presents the ITV
weather, has launched two new DVDs that prepare the public for
dealing with flooding and train the emergency services for flood
situations.
Martyn Davies spent the day at the Norfolk Constabulary
headquarters in Wymondham meeting police officers and the media to
reinforce the message about the importance of preparing for the
worst. He is passionate about the impact of climate change and
urged people at the launch to make time to prepare their family and
home, just in case the worst happens.
Flooding… are you prepared? is a superb awareness DVD that allows viewers to think about the many issues they face in a flood.
Pam Williams, NORFilm creative
He said: “One of the consequences of climate change is the
threat of an increase in the frequency of major flooding in the UK,
from the sea, rivers and heavy rainfall.
“As a weather forecaster, I have seen and experienced the
devastating effects that flooding can have on individuals, families
and communities. These DVDs are invaluable tools for frontline
officers and the public on how to prepare and respond to
flooding.”
People living in Cumbria are still trying to cope with the
aftermath and devastation of the floods that struck last November.
The Environment Agency described the torrential rain which fell as
a "once in a thousand year" flood and whilst incidents like this
are rare, there is an increasing threat of the frequency of major
flooding.
Although we cannot change the weather we can do something to
help minimise the impact. Being prepared for flooding could save
your life and your home.
The DVD
Flooding… are you prepared? highlights the possible signs of
flooding and what to do if flood water reaches the front door. It
encourages people to register with the Environment Agency to
receive flood alerts and flood warnings and important information
on how to best prepare for a flood.

“Flooding… are you prepared? is a superb awareness DVD that
allows viewers to think about the many issues they face in a flood.
Everything from the tell-tales signs of flooding with rising drains
through to the loss of power in high-rise flats.”
Simon Black, head of flood mapping at Aviva, who sponsored
Flooding … are you prepared?, said:
“Insurance can replace the furniture, the televisions and the
cooker, it can dry-out and repair your home, but it can never
replace the ruined mementos – the family photo albums, your child’s
first drawings or the wedding DVD.
“So the more people are aware of the sheer damage that filthy
flood water can do, the better - and that means knowing what to do
in the event of a flood and making your home more resilient and
resistant to flood in the first place.”
A number of organisations pull together during a major flood,
each offering their own expertise to help people, save properties
and cope with the disruption that flooding causes. During a major
flood the police co-ordinate the emergency services and help with
evacuation of people from their homes where this is necessary.
The DVDs are narrated and presented by Martyn Davies, supported
by the Environment Agency and sponsored by Aviva and were created
by NORFilm creative following the requirement for an up-to-date
training resource.
