Insp Ross McDermottYou will notice that I haven’t written on my blog for some time now. The reason for this is that I have recently been given the opportunity to manage the Safer Neighbourhood Teams for the Earlham, Larkman & Marlpit and University & Eaton areas of Norwich and have handed over the management of Norwich City Centre to Chief Inspector Dennis Lacey.

Student focus

Starting here on 13 September 2010, I am now based at the Blackdale School site which forms part of the University of East Anglia (UEA) campus. We have faced some early and pressing challenges around ensuring the safe arrival of a large number of UEA students in to the area and cementing their understanding of crime prevention and the work of the Safer Neighbourhood Teams.

We have a permanent presence at the UEA currently and work heavily on home/residence security, cycle security and general safety awareness – all of which seem to be going very well. We are also working with the ‘LCR’ to ensure that forthcoming music events, which attract people from far and wide, not just students; are policed appropriately according to risk, especially as we have seen a tendency for thieves to target mobile phones at such events.

Anti-social behaviour

Another issue raised for the team is anti-social behaviour on Motum Road, which we are working on in partnership with the council, residents and other parties to resolve. I will continue to report on the progress of this as we move forward in the coming weeks.

Policing events

We are currently looking forward to events such as ‘Sparks in the Park’, hosted in the University and Eaton neighbourhood on Bonfire night weekend, which is always known to be an excellent event. The safety of the event is managed by Norfolk Police and partners – this year being no exception.

Drugs focus

The team have already carried out several warrants in relation to drugs possession and cultivation and I am keen that we retain a proactive edge when dealing with issues that matter most to people in the areas we police. By this we aim to protect them and their families from harm while providing the best possible service to everyone that we deal with.

I look forward to updating you again soon.
