Police Specials - What does a Special do?
The Special Constabulary is a voluntary body whose officers
assist their regular colleagues to police the communities of
Norfolk.
Special Constabulary officers are ordinary men and women who
dedicate some of their spare time to help us ensure Norfolk remains
a safe county in which to visit, live and work.
They have the same powers as regular officers, wear an almost
identical uniform, carry the same equipment and are fully-trained
for their role.
Specials perform two main types of duty. The first is to support
our regular officers with the day-to-day policing of Norfolk. This
could involve foot and vehicle patrols, being part of the immediate
response team or assisting with police operations.
As a Special, you could be dealing with road traffic accidents,
public order, domestic disputes, missing persons or fires. You
could also assist the Force where large numbers of officers are
required to police public events. These can range from village and
town festivals and local sporting events to county shows and royal
visits.
Specials are able to arrange their duties to suit home and work
commitments - although in an emergency they may be called out for
duty.
