To apply to be a police officer you must be:

  • At least 18 years old. There is no upper age limit although the normal retirement age for Constables and Sergeants is 55 years and you will have a two-year probationary period
  • A British citizen or a member of the European Community or other states in the EEA (Iceland, Norway, Liechtenstein). Commonwealth citizens and foreign nationals are also eligible but only if they are resident in the UK free of restrictions. If you are a Commonwealth citizen or a foreign national you must provide proof that you have no restrictions on your stay in the UK
  • Law-abiding and have a high standard of personal behaviour and social conduct
  • In good health and physically fit. You will also need to meet our eyesight standards. There are no height restrictions
  • Able to drive with a full current driving licence.

 

You can not be a police officer if you have been convicted or cautioned for a serious arrestable offence.

If you have minor convictions/cautions you may still be able to be a police officer but there are certain offences and conditions which could make you ineligible.
