PCSOs talking with the public

Since Police Community Support Officers (PCSOs) were introduced in 2003, they have proven to be a highly successful asset to local policing as they provide the reassuring presence on the streets that the public demands.

PCSOs can often be the first point of contact with the public, providing direct access to police services. This gives communities the opportunity to influence what the police should focus on locally, to work with them on their safety needs and to enhance Safer Neighbourhoods.

Until the Police Reform Act 2002, police officers – supported by special constables and traffic wardens - were the only service seen out on the streets.

This has limitations because patrolling officers have many different competing priorities. As patrol officers need to provide a swift response to urgent calls, they are increasingly based in a vehicle. Patrol tasks tend to be interrupted by urgent incidents, custody requirements, paperwork, etc.

As well as supporting the activities of police officers, PCSOs have a very important role with responsibilities of their own. Becoming a PCSO is an excellent way of starting a varied, fulfilling and community focused career within Norfolk Constabulary.

Recruitment

Please note: Thank you for your interest, however, Norfolk Constabulary is not recruiting for Police Officers or PCSO’s and we do not foresee this situation changing for the foreseeable future.

However, why don’t you consider volunteering as a Special Constable and support the work of your police in your community?

The Special Constabulary is a force of trained volunteers who work with and support Norfolk Constabulary. ‘Specials’ as Special Constables are known, come from all walks of life – they are teachers, taxi drivers, accountants and secretaries, or any number other careers – and they all volunteer a minimum of four hours a week to their local police force, forming a vital link between the regular (full-time) police and the local community.
