Norfolk Constabulary serves a diverse community and we are keen
to develop a workforce that reflects this.
Visible and non-visible minority ethnic groups, people with
disabilities, lesbian, gay, bi-sexual and transgender people are
currently under represented in our workplace and therefore we
particularly encourage interest from people in these groups.
It is important to understand that although we are able to
encourage individuals from under-represented groups to apply to
join Norfolk Constabulary, all applications are strictly considered
on merit, not ethnicity, gender or sexual orientation.
The above criteria are subject to reasonable adjustment in line
with the
Disability Discrimination Act (DDA).
If you have any concerns about how your gender, ethnic origin,
religion, sexual orientation or any other aspect of your life might
impact on a career with Norfolk Constabulary, you can request a
completely confidential discussion with a serving police officer
from a similar background. If nobody is available, you can be put
in touch with an officer with a genuine understanding of the issues
surrounding diversity within the police.
Simply call 01953 423788 or 01953
423793 if you would like to arrange to talk to
someone.
'First Contacts'
Our 'First Contacts' are available to all members of staff who
have issues of concern at work. First Contacts are both police
officers and members of police staff who have undertaken specialist
training to enable them to provide confidential support and
information.
Networks
We have extensive staff support networks to create confidential
forums for people to share experiences, advice, support and
reassurance in an informal and relaxed environment.
Where possible, you will be allowed time out of your working day
to attend network meetings.
They can be a valuable source of career advice, mentoring and
building confidence and inspiration through role models. Active
participation in the network can in itself help you to develop
skills which may be useful in your career.
These networks help us to support and develop our diverse
workforce as well as acting as a 'critical friend' - providing
different perspectives on both employment and service delivery.
By sharing their expertise, they help us to develop good policy,
practice, plans and strategies. They also help to improve
recruitment, retention and progression of under-represented and
disadvantaged groups. The Constabulary is pleased to be working
with the following staff networks:
The Access Course is a series of lessons to build the confidence
of prospective applicants from under-represented sections of the
community. It particularly focuses on people who have been out of
work for a long-time, mature entrants, females, ethnic minorities
and single parents.
The Access course runs for 12 weeks one night a week between 6pm
and 9pm. It is a free service and is held in King's Lynn, Wymondham
and Great Yarmouth.
It is classroom-based and you will be trained by qualified adult
trainers who are either police officers, police staff or college
lecturers.
The course is designed to give you guidance and support in
making a application to join Norfolk Constabulary. It will not,
however, coach you through your application and will not give your
application priority.
Norfolk Constabulary runs a number of recruitment Open Evenings
for underrepresented sections of the community throughout the year.
These evenings are an opportunity for potential applicants to ask
questions and learn more about the application process.
Our commitment to fair treatment and equality of opportunity is
non-negotiable.
We believe that the members of the diverse communities we serve
and all those who contribute to the work of the police service have
a right to be treated with dignity and respect.
We will ensure that our employment practices promote a work
culture that values diversity and respect for the individual and
where the only criterion for recruitment and promotion is
suitability for the post. We are determined to eliminate all forms
of harassment and unfair bias.
We recognise our responsibilities in promoting equality of
opportunity, eliminating unlawful discrimination and promoting good
relations between diverse communities.
We are committed to the development of a workforce, which fully
reflects the diversity of our community.
Interested in applying but would like to know more from someone
who can share their own experiences with you? Then find out more
about our Buddying Scheme. The scheme puts you into contact with a
serving Officer or member of Support staff with a similar
background to yourself. They can provide you with useful advice and
guidance to help you in your application to Norfolk
Constabulary.
