How technology is helping the fingerprint officer solve crime
Livescan
Livescan machines have now been
installed at all main police custody suites across Norfolk. They
allow "inkless fingerprinting" by use of a digital capture system.
The fingers and palms of an arrestee are scanned, captured
electronically and then transferred over to the IDENT1 database.
This means an identity search can be carried out quickly and
effectively, usually in less than ten minutes. Fast identification
of persons coming into police custody provides significant
operational and welfare benefits.
IDENT1
IDENT1 is the national automated fingerprint system which
is a powerful computing infrastructure that connects all UK Police
forces to the Home Office via a central database.
It enables soft copy storage of all fingerprint forms from
people arrested for recordable offences and currently contains
around seven million forms. It is this collection of forms that
fingerprints recovered from crime scenes can be searched against by
Norfolk Constabulary Fingerprint Officers.
As well as searching fingermarks recovered from a crime scene
IDENT1 has the facility to search palm marks. This enables the
fingerprint officer to potentially identify an offender from a
crime scene where only palm marks have been found.
