Forensics
The role of Forensic Science in
Policing
Think of the phrase 'Forensic Science' and
all sorts of TV images spring to mind. But what does it actually
mean? How does it fit into policing and solving crime?
You would be quite correct in thinking that it is 'finding
clues', but there is a lot more to it than that. A good definition
is that it is 'the application of science to the law'. Forensic
Science is used to associate or eliminate a link with a suspect to
the scene of a crime or victim. This is done by searching for and
examining physical traces at the scene or on the victim such as
fingerprints, blood, bodily fluids, hair, clothing, fibres - even a
footprint or tyre mark.
You may be surprised to hear that Forensic Science has actually
been used since the early part of the nineteenth century. It has of
course changed a great deal since then and new techniques are being
developed all the time. Forensic Science is now one of the police's
main tools in the fight against crime.
